Saturday Night Derby Review for June 4th

By Dan Ratherderby

The biggest question in the Iowa Roller Derby scene right now would have to be this: Can anyone stop the Old Capitol City Roller Girls?

Last week they proved they can win without Bat R. Up in the line-up, via a breakneck second half comeback against the Sioux City Roller Dames. This week OCCRG, with the captain back in the line-up, absolutely destroyed the Omaha Rollergirls: AAA 225-8. This marks the second time this season that the mighty OCCRG defense has held an opponent to less than 10 points in a bout. This writer is looking forward to reading Left 4 Deadwards and Triple D. Zaster’s  blog recaps.

With the victory, OCCRG boosts their record to 8-0, matching the 2010 record of the Mid Iowa Rollers. They have also seized sole possession of first place in League 1 of the unofficial and unsanctioned Iowa Roller Derby League Table.

This Saturday night the Iowa City-based team will have what looks to be a very taxing examination of their derby prowess at Coralville when the Minnesota RollerGirls: All-Stars roll in to town. One gets the feeling, however, that with the way OCCRG is playing, nothing is impossible for them.

In Rolfe, the Oskaloosa Mayhem Girls notched their second win of the season with a win over the Dakota City Demolition Crew (0-3), 208-56. This was the opening night for DC/DC at the Rolfe RAM Center, which is essentially a high school gymnasium. It was very small and it gave this writer the image that derby had just invaded the set of “Hoosiers.”  That is not an insult. Small gyms mean there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Older gyms, like the RAM have a certain warmth and character about them that you don’t find in the newer venues.

The Cedar Rapids Rollergirls: Bombshell Cartel (1-4) traveled to Champaign-Urbana and fell to the Twin City Derby Girls: Boneyard Bombshells, 199-64.

Saturday Night Derby Preview for June 4th

By Dan Ratherderby

The 2011 campaign enters June with a bang. This Saturday night we have four Iowa teams in action.

First, the undefeated Old Capitol City Roller Girls (7-0) travel to Omaha to take on the Omaha Rollergirls AAA. This will be another vigorous examination for OCCRG. Should they win this bout, they will match the record of the 2010 Mid Iowa Rollers perfect season record of 8-0. They would also seize first place in Iowa Roller Derby’s unofficial and unsanctioned League Table (See below).

In Rolfe,  the Dakota City Demolition Crew (0-2) will host their first home bout against the Oskaloosa Mayhem Girls (1-1). It will be very interesting to see what kind of crowd the bout attracts.

Finally, the Cedar Rapids Bombshell Cartel (1-3) travel to Champaign-Urbana, Illinois to play the Twin City Derby Girls: Boneyard Bombshells.

Here are the League Tables heading into Saturday Night.

Plans Underway For Formation of New DSM League

By Dan Ratherderby

There will be a third derby league in Des Moines.

Rebellicious Sergtaz and Rebel Yellin’ Rocket, two veterans of the Des Moines Derby Dames: Crash Test Dolls,  announced in an exclusive to the Iowa Roller Derby the formation of a new recreational roller derby league going under the working name of the Rollin’ Rebels.

League founders Rebellicious Sergtaz and Rebel Yellin’ Rocket wrote that their league will be purely recreational in nature and will be a renegade league in that the Rollin’ Rebels will not be contending with WFTDA affiliated leagues.

The league is currently looking for female skaters over the age of 18, Non-Skating Officials and Referees, with prospective inner league bouts slated to be played at the Val Air Ballroom in West Des Moines.

The first Fresh Meat call will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 14th at 2050 SE Four Seasons Drive in Ankeny.

“The founders of the Rebels have stated that their mission is for those who want to play Derby, will have the opportunity to do so on a minor league level and without a lot of time constraints,” the press release read.  “Their goals is to bring derby to as many Iowans as they can and have fun doing it.”

For more information or to ask questions, contact Rebellicious Sergtaz and/or Rebel Yellin’ Rocket at rollinrebels@gmail.com.

Saturday Night Derby Wrap-Up May 29, 2011

By Dan Ratherderby

It appears that Saturday night offered one of the finest derby nights that we have seen in the state for sometime, with the number one team in the state almost being toppled and a rookie league almost clinching their first victory of their brief existence.

But alas neither were to be.

The Old Capitol City Roller Girls survived a scare from the Sioux City Roller Dames and appeared to have mounted a furious second half comeback to clinch their seventh win of the season, and emerged victorious in a 141-127 bout. According to Sioux City Korn Stalker skater Michael Lunning, who appears to have been in attendance, the Roller Dames built a sizable 82- 49 halftime lead. With 20 minutes to go, Lunning reported that OCCRG cut the lead to twenty, 97-77. With 10 minutes the lead was down to five. From there, it appears that the bout remained close until OCCRG put distance between them and Sioux City in the final minute.

OCCRG emerges from the weekend with their undefeated season intact at 7-0. Sioux City closes out their 2010-2011 campaign at 6-6.

After enduring a horrific 298-6 drubbing at the hand of OCCRG in Waterloo last week, the Cedar Valley Derby Dames: Push Up Brawlers sprang to life this weekend by venturing to the 7 Flags Center in Clive and apparently gave the Des Moines Derby Dames: Crash Test Dolls all they could handle, before succumbing in a 137-97 bout. Indicative of the apparent tightness of the bout: CTD led 52-49 at the half.

The Crash Test Dolls move to 3-1 on their season while the Push Up Brawlers now stand at 0-4.

Here are this weeks unofficial and unsanctioned League Tables:

Saturday Night Derby Wrap-Up: May 21, 2011

The Old Capitol City Roller Girls extended their 2011 record to 6-0 with a lopsided defeat of the Cedar Valley Derby Divas: Push Up Brawlers, 298-6 before a crowd of roughly 500 at McElroy Auditorium in Waterloo on Saturday. Triple D. Zaster lead the way for OCCRG pouring in 91 points. Gladi8her scored 76 points and three OCCRG players each delivered 24 to the cause. This was the third bout ever for the Brawlers (0-3) and having the moxie to take on the best team in the State of Iowa should call for applause from everyone in the Iowa derby community. The victory moved OCCRG from third to second place in the unsanctioned Iowa Roller Derby League Table Rankings.

The Cedar Rapids Rollergirls: Bombshell Cartel (1-3) ventured to northern Wisconsin and lost by a heartbreaking point to the Wisconsin River Valley Roller Girls, 162-161.

Finally, the Sioux City Korn Stalkers men’s derby team achieved their first ever victory against the Colorado Rollin Bones, 159-137 in Kearney, Nebraska. The win elevates the Korn Stalkers 2011 record to 1-3.

Here are the current rankings for teams covered in the Iowa Roller Derby League Table. Three points for a win, one point for a loss. Remember this is an informal ranking system and it’s important to note that it is not sanctioned by any of the teams that Iowa Roller Derby covers.

But I hope they are reading it anyway.

Saturday Night Derby Wrap Up.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Brawlers have landed.

Another major salvo was fired last night at the McElroy Auditorium in Waterloo. My sources on the Cedar Valley Derby Divas: Push-Up Brawlers entered into Saturday night in hopes of putting 500 people in the arena to watch their opening home bout.

They passed their goal with flying colors, as an unofficial county of 2,100+ jammed inside the old arena. What started as an assumption by Morganized Chaos and Bruise Hound, that modern roller derby had a place in the Cedar Valley, proved a success beyond anyone’s expectations.

While this author is not convinced that Iowa Roller Derby has entered a gilded age yet, there is no doubt that the 2011 campaign shows the scene progressing from strength to strength. First, a record crowd by the Des Moines Derby Dames at the Jacobson Exposition Center in February, which packed 2,500, making it the largest crowd ever to witness a bout in state history. Now, seemingly out of nowhere, Cedar Valley has hoisted a similar number.

The derby fever is here. The time has arrived.

Now to the bout itself.

The Cedar Rapids Rollergirls: Bombshell Cartel made their first entry into the win column with a 148-93 win over the Push-Up Brawlers. As you can see on the league table, among the League 2 teams that started in the spring, the situation is so fluid that the Bombshell Cartel jumped three spots on my league table from six to third. The Bombshell Cartel and the Quad City Rollers: Rock Island Line are at an identical five points in the League 2 Table, but since the Cartel has scored more collective points this season than the Rock Island Line (371-205), they own third place all to themselves at this point.

In S. Sioux City, the Sioux City Korn Stalkers were defeated in their opening home bout against the Twin City Terrors (Minneapolis-St Paul) by the score of 266-88.

Here are the complete League Tables as of May 1.
